One of the great things about south Cornwall beaches is the calm water, making it perfect for water sports such as kayaking. If you find yourself in the area, it’s definitely worth venturing out into the sea. Kayaking is the perfect way to see the stunning coastline, it allows you to explore hidden coves and sea caves as well as get close to wildlife.
Where to get a Kayak
There are a number of beaches around St Austell Bay where you can rent a kayak. Porthpean Beach – this is my personal favorite as it has some pretty cool caves and secret beaches close by. There is also a friendly seal family that lives in the area! The beach has plenty of parking and step free access in case you wish to bring your own kayaks. Porthpean Outdoor Centre offers kayaking trips and kayak hire as well as plenty of other water activities www.cornwalloutdoors.org/families-friends/kayak-hire/. You can also hire from Cornwall kayak and SUP hire. Porthpean beach is only 8 minute drive away from Rockleigh Place.
Alternatives include Polkerris Beach and Pentewan Beach. Polkerris beach is very well equipped for water activities and will have plenty of equipment for hire. The beach has a couple of pubs/restaurants right on the beach. Parking is nearby so you could bring your own equipment too. Pentewan Beach is a large, sandy beach surrounded by a nice valley. They have plenty of Kayaks and other watersports equipment for hire, although the beach can get very crowded as there is a holiday park nearby.
Where to Kayak at Porthpean
My favourite stretch of coastline is from Porthpean towards Mevagissey, as far as your paddling skills will take you. I love this part as there are plenty of cliffs, caves and small hidden beaches, which can only be accessed by water. However wherever you decide to venture out, you will not be disappointed!
There are three beautiful secret beaches, which don’t get busy as you can only get there by water. They’re perfect for a spot of swimming, relaxation or some rock jumping!
When to go
Any weather is fine as long as the sea is not too wavy. Avoid this activity during windy/wavy days. Otherwise the weather doesn’t really matter, if it’s chilly just be sure to wear a wetsuit. Check with kayak rental places when they’re open as opening times will vary depending on the season.

- Why not get a crab line and see if you can catch some crabs while you’re out!
- Take all your rubbish back with you
