If you want to escape the crowds, why not give Hemmick Beach a go. Only accessible by a walking trail (10-15 minute walk), it means not many people flock to this beach. Don't be put off by a short walk however as this beach and the surrounding area is very beautiful!
Hemmick Beach is on the south coast of Cornwall and offers an expansive stretch of sand and pebbles. There are many little coves to explore at low tide and the surrounding hills are stunning.
What to do there:
This beach is great for a quiet spot of relaxing, exploring, swimming and hiking. It's on the coastal trail to Dodman point so can be conveniently combined with a walk to Dodman's Cross.
The water is very clear and usually not wavy, perfect for a refreshing dip. The beach has no facilities and no lifeguard so please take care if you are going into the water.
How to get there:
You will need to drive to Penare, where there is a National Trust car park. The drives takes around 25 minutes from Rockleigh Place. From the car park you will need to join the walking trail towards Hemmick Beach, it will be sign posted. The walk is hilly but short, about 10-15 minutes. You'll get amazing views as you approach the beach. There is no parking at the beach although there is a very narrow lane passing by the beach. It is not advisable to take this road as its extremely narrow.
When to visit:
If you are visiting in the summer it's a great time to enjoy the water and sunshine. If you are visiting when its a bit more chilly it's still a great place to walk the coastal trail and stop for a picnic on the beach. The beach has plenty of space and sheltered spots.
Practical information:
This is a relatively 'wild' beach with no facilities so please bring what you need with you. Please also take all your rubbish when you leave. Be sure to check tide times if you're exploring the caves and coves and take care if you are going in the water.
