Tintagel Castle

Immerse yourself  in the legends, myths and histories at Tintagel. Situated on the north coast in a beautiful location, Tintagel and the surrounding ruins of a dark age settlement make an amazing day out. This magical place has been an inspiration for the legends of King Arthur and Merlin and tales of Tristan and Isolde.

There is little left of the castle itself, but the setting is gorgeous with dramatic views from bridges, stunning coastline and caves which are exposed at low tide.

What to do there:

Walk the recommended route to see the castle and settlement ruins including a walk up to Arthur’s statue, descend to the beach to visit the Merlins Cave at low tide. Allow yourself 1-2 hours for the castle visit. If you have more time, the Tintagel town is definitely worth a visit with nice pubs, shops and a beautiful old post office building. The surrounding coastline is stunning so why not walk the coastal trail too.

When to visit:

Tintagel is open all year around (apart from some holidays) so is a great option for the winter. Visiting in low season means there will be very few people, so you can really enjoy the stunning scenery.

Useful info:

Parking is available in Tintagel town, the castle is a short walk from there. There is a small but interesting exhibition at the entrance of the castle which is definitely worth a visit to learn about the history and legends of this location. Head back to Tintagel town for food or drive further to Boscastle, a picturesque village with witchcraft and magic museum.
